The notorious red imported fire ant (S. invicta), is a an invasive species from South America, has thus far not established itself in Arizona, but does have colonies in California and New Mexico. They are far more aggressive compared to what the native fire ants plus their stings substantial investment painful.
Fire ants are reddish-brown to black. They range from 1/16 inches to 1/requested long, while using the smaller rands being "minor" or "worker" ants and the larger ones being "soldier" ants. They choose warmth and have been regarded by nest near fireplaces. They may also build their mound-like nests under stones or boards, or in the wood or masonry of houses.
